Artist Statement: I enjoy making artwork out of scrap materials. Personally, I don’t like seeing things being thrown away or wasted when they can be utilized to create a stunning beauty instead. The act of renovating and reusing everyday things to create a piece is culturally significant because there is a tremendous amount of waste from consumerism. Taking the moment to step back and realize how much we’ve contributed to landfills prompts change to occur, and I want to change my ways by creating this art. Specifically, I’m interested in working with cardboard, household products, paper from old assignments, shopping tags, and wrappers. In addition to these materials, I also implement colored pencil, marker, and graphite. However, a lot of my work also expresses my feelings and identity. Art is one of the many ways for introspection and to explore who you are as a person. Many of the objects seen or used in the form of collage connect to me personally because they capture a part of my daily life and my own consumption. Overall, my work has room for improvement and exploration, but I’m proud of what I made because I took the time to think about the process and concepts applied.
