Artist Statement:
In this piece, I used ink pens for detailed linework, particularly in the ornate floral pattern of the background. I used colored pencil for the subject’s skin, experimenting with hatching, cross- hatching, and other mark-making techniques to add texture and depth. The skin is rendered in layered hatching of yellow, green, and teal, giving it a delicate, almost gossamer quality which contrasts with the rich and dramatic deep red of the background. The subject’s blank expression and the crack-like lines on her face — reminiscent of a porcelain doll — suggest emotional fragility, as she is on the verge of breaking or transforming in some way. The title “Awakening” hints at some sort of internal shift, whether one of self-discovery and emotional realization, or, in a more literal sense, the hazy transition between dreams and reality.
