Artist Statement:

My work as a whole is driven by finding a way to express life’s experiences, including my own. In this piece, I tackled the topic of sexual assault, one that is not talked about enough and is all too common. Unfortunately, sexual assault has made serious impacts on so many young people’s lives, so I made this piece to draw attention to the issue, to validate the experience, and to give people an opportunity to feel seen. I chose to make the symbol on the necklace be the symbol for sexual assault survivors, to make those who see this piece, and relate to it, feel less alone. The strong-willed and emotionless pose I chose for the woman in the background shows that even though experiencing something as traumatizing as sexual assault can be debilitating, it does not define you, and that you have the power.
