Teacher Name: Melissa Gerleve
Grade: 12

Materials: Clay, Paint, Canvas
Dimensions: 12x12x4″
Artist Statement: My first piece was meant for a school project with the prompt ‘connection’. I decided to first make a face from clay because I knew that was something I’ve been wanting to do even though I had no prior experience with clay at all. After that, I decided to do connecting with nature as the theme for my project. After making the face, I started painting different leaves and flowers on a round canvas to represent the variety of nature. Then, glaze on the face to make it match the color of the canvas, and then attach it to the canvas. The piece represents the calmness of being in nature and embracing it. You can truly connect to it, not just physically, but mentally. It’s almost a way of making others feel connected back to this planet we inhabit in its truest form.
