Artist Statement: The subject of this piece is Napoleon Dynamite, the titular character of the 2004 cult classic film. In this piece, I drew Napoleon’s portrait with graphite, and I created his characteristic curly hair by gluing down real pressed flowers. The vibrant spectrum of color among the flowers stands in stark contrast to the rest of the piece, which is completely achromatic, creating a visually compelling narrative. I think the piece encapsulates Napoleon’s uniqueness and whimsy.
