Description: A sheer rock formation set behind rolling, wooded mountains, Words in Context portrays Japanese Kanji-style characters dripping from a grand, misty waterfall through a modern interpretation of traditional Japanese ink landscapes. With ancient Japanese architecture and a minimalist style, the painting alludes to history while incorporating language in nature. As written in the top-right, words are shown in the context of nature and the inherency and vitality of language to our world is revealed.

Artist Statement: An essential element of human communication, language transcends physical borders and inspires life. Language has developed in different ways across social and cultural contexts, yet its growth has occurred nonetheless, resulting in thousands of dialects with millions of unique characters, pronunciations, and structures. In this way, language forms the basis of our communities, relationships, and natural world. In my artistic exhibition, I seek to portray this Linguistic Inherency of language to nature, revealing its significance in all contexts and the complex nature of unique language systems. To portray this cultural contrast, I immersed myself in the many cultural representations of calligraphy, everywhere from western, industrial typeface to traditional forms of Arabic calligraphy.
