Description: This piece is based on my mother’s stories of being sexually harassed by men, the feeling of objectification and the bluebellvine flower. I painted a naked woman tangled in vines as she lies stuck in a body of water. I used nature as a theme for this piece because of its societal correlation with women/feminine traits (ex: Mother Earth, Mother Nature) but twisted it so that nature represents a patriarchal society in this piece. The vines trapping the woman represent sexist perception, oppressive objectification and manipulation of women by a patriarchal society. Above and surrounding the woman are four bluebellvines, darkening in color starting from the left. The darkening in color in the flowers represents how women and their “innocence” fades the more society sexualizes them. I chose bluebellvines specifically because of their species name, clitoria ternatea, and when I researched flowers, I found out that the name was chosen because of its resemblance to female genitalia.

Artist Statement: Art is my escape from the confines of my fears and insecurities. It’s like a bird set free from its cage, soaring to heights of self-expression and authenticity. The moment I take up a pencil and begin sketching, my fears dissipate, and I become my true self, my pencil gliding along the paper like a liberated bird. My artworks serve as a mirror reflecting the deepest facets of my identity. In my portfolio, I embark on a creative journey that delves into my mental health experiences and the challenges of growing up in a patriarchal society.
