Artist Statement: I took the photograph of the carrots titled “raíces” because they reminded me of my childhood and the times that my grandfather and I would plant in our home garden. The word raíces means roots in English. Thus, I relate this word to the idea that my grandfather was a father figure in my life who set me up for success through his encouragement and support. Our gardening days are a part of my childhood I cherish the most. Moments like those are where the roots stem from; they remind me of my culture, one I get to engage in every day because of him. Our times bonding as a young girl have morphed into a much deeper relationship that I adore. I decided to fill in the frame in order to carefully catch the details of the carrots such as the many roots they have leaching out.
