Artist Statement: What feelings does the color Red evoke? My portfolio revolves around the color Red. The reason for this is I wanted to make a portfolio based on color psychology, like with how colors represent multiple different things in media. Blue would represent tranquility, Yellow would represent happiness and joy, White would represent heaven, and Red would represent romance, among many more examples. However, for my portfolio of color psychology, I am focusing on the more negative traits for a color. Instead of what I already described the colors above with, Blue would represent sadness, Yellow would represent illness, White would represent isolation, and Red would represent anger. Red’s negative traits are what I chose for my portfolio. Nearly all of my pieces are filled with the color of Red. I want these pieces to have emotion, as if the art pieces themselves are angry, filled with rage and aggression. The question is though, what feelings do these pieces evoke among those who see it? I want these pieces to give a feeling of dread, or uneasiness, whenever someone was to look at the art piece. As in “Why does the piece specifically look like this?” and “Why does it look scary?”. This is intentional, as someone in real life would question the exact same things in relation to someone who is extremely angry. That’s my portfolio. These pieces symbolize my own anger, my own rage, and essentially my own feelings about this world. I’m very mad about what’s going on currently, and the worst part is it’s impossible to change, so I am forced to endure it all for essentially the rest of my life. Each piece being made with different material is intentional. I chose materials that would most effectively contribute to the mood that the piece is supposed to give, and I think I did well. The bird, a cardinal, represents my own anger. It is Anger Incarnate. It ends up possessing me, and makes the world red, giving me a true reason to be angry at the world.
