Artist Statement: With the theme of “Home,” I wanted to show the feeling that people tend to use in media, music, and literature. Whether it be the eclectic stew of buildings lining the Chicago River downtown, the stuffed animal in the window of my great aunt’s house, or the native animals where I live, my goal was to show the comfort and sentimental value of examples of “home” at both the macro and micro scale. To capture the essence of what home is like, I used a canon EOS 70D, my dad’s old camera, and snapped a picture wherever I felt that people kept memories. I love seeing art that houses memories, specifically photographs of objects and places that house an almost tangible sentimental value, so I used that as my driving focus while taking, editing, and choosing photos to use. I have been taking photos for around two years now, and one of my first excursions going out to take photos was where I took the bridge photo with one of my close friends. It’s a special memory of having a fun time which I can look back on fondly and see the value that it holds in the different parts of the photo, which has led me to want to capture that feeling more and more. Ultimately I believe that home is just a word that denotes comfort and time, the value of a space and the memories associate with an area or an object, and I hoped to represent the sense of “home” as I understand it.
