Artist Statement: I went to the Lincoln Park zoo and visited the lion exhibit. To me they looked displaced and I felt sorry for them. In this painting I wanted to show the two worlds of this lion’s life. It once lived in freedom and now it lives in captivity. I used mixed media to illustrate the contrast of worlds. The background is acrylic paint and shows a colorful scene of the Serengeti. This represents the tiger’s freedom. To contrast, I used a pencil to draw my hands taking a photo of the tiger behind bars in the zoo. I wanted to show how black and white represents sadness and captivity.
