Artist Statement: My painting is based on the late great opera/jazz singer Marian Anderson. Marian was the first African American to sing at the Metropolitan Opera, she also received the first Presidential Medal of Freedom, Congressional Gold Medal, Kennedy Center Honors, National Medal of Arts, and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. I decided to paint her because she is someone I look up to, and because she was a women of high honor, and full of sophistication she
makes me proud to be a black women. I discovered Marian when I was reading about one of my favorite painters Laura Wheeler Waring, she painted a beautiful picture of Marian which got me inspired to learn more about Marian. When working on my painting I used oil paint for her creamy golden skin, and acrylic paint for her gown and the background. I decided to paint the back ground a blueish gray because she has such a striking presents I wanted her to be the focus of attention.
