Description: What is growth? How do you grow? Not with milk; it’s a myth.

Artist Statement: In my pieces, I use butterflies as an expression to describe growth, liberty, loving myself, and progress. In my culture’s history, Aztecs believed Monarch butterflies were the spirits of the dead returning to see loved ones. The migration of these monarchs usually happens during the celebration of Dia De Los Muertos and is a significant connection between the living and the dead. These monarchs in my life not only mean liberty, growth, and progress, they also represent my cousin and grandma who passed away. My expression in my art is me surpassing these deaths that impacted and still do to this day. These pieces were made for my AP Art Portfolio which is being created this school year. I incorporated butterflies in (Your Attention, Growth, Quien Soy?, Nuestra Monarca, and Los Extraño) to represent these loved ones who have left us, but also my way of growing through my lifestyle and art style. The art piece (Quien Soy?) is mixed media that consists of tissue paper and charcoal. The use of these products was used to add texture and layers to my art pieces. I made it as an introduction of who I am with the layers I added. The other art pieces were made out of digital media since digital media gives me the liberty to add multiple layers and textures to my pieces. It also gave me an opportunity to grow in my style through digital art.
