Description: I wanted to capture that somber essence when my friend Maia played a heavy and dark cello piece. The purple dark blobs represent dark thoughts depicting that her mind is clouded and wants to focus on playing it correctly. Her eyes are closed, her face calm but you can see her thinking as her eyes are moving around, although they’re still closed. After a moment of figuring out the right note, her face is calm once again and goes on playing the rest of the dark piece. I stuck to dark tones for her face but for the background I wanted to contrast with brighter colors like red & yellow. This technique was mainly inspired by Bisa Butler. The way she stitches her figures’ faces is unique as she uses color-blocking to create dimension and depth. On the purple blobs, I added those lines to add another element of line and color but also add imagery. Those lines represent those burst of color she’s able to see pass her dark cloudy thoughts.
