Artist Statement: I wanted to create a piece to expand my creative growth. I don’t normally paint landscapes, but while coming across this photo I thought it was beautiful. It is of an abandoned church, Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux. The pillars and ceiling really stood out to me. I worked on this for about seven days, studying and analyzing the photo and painting what I saw. I didn’t go into this with a specific strategy, just working my way up. I used acrylic paint, on canvas. I have used acrylic paint before, but I have never done a full landscape before. I usually create portraits but I wanted to challenge myself by trying something new. Finishing this piece was an amazing moment. It reminded me of the challenges I overcame. It reminded me that I can do anything I set my mind to. For my second piece, my purpose was to show my interpretation of the God of the Underworld, Hades. I used India ink to create a stone-like illusion. The skull in white was to represent his rule over the dead. His highly carved cheekbones and big eyes are to capture the outer beauty of Hades.
