Description: I made this illustration because I really wanted to see two happy queer women on a date, so I drew two of my original characters on a stereotypical date at a diner. In the illustration, Axel (right) is just staring at Abby (left) like the hopeless romantic she is, and Abby can’t help but barely hold back a laugh from the situation.
Artist Statement: I stuck with art for years because it became an outlet that let me quickly and accurately portray intense emotions I was experiencing for the first time as a teenager: depression, love and self-hate. After I stopped making only vent art, I began to appreciate the process of making and learning how to make 2D art itself, and I fell in love with the feeling of finishing a piece that has some visual appeal to it that leaves you staring. I realized that at heart I like making art for art’s sake, art that’s visually appealing and accessible. It’s why I focus on color and composition, why I gravitate towards digital art, and why my sketchbooks are full of thumbnails, doodles and swatches. However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a narrative and/or message behind my artwork. The details I include are intentional, and when you look at my art that way, it becomes something really special.
