Artist Statement: All of my artwork always has some kind of connection back to myself and even sometimes it discusses a larger issue. All of it is very personal and raw with some kind of emotion. The reason I make art is genuinely because I enjoy making it and I want to be able to start conversations, art does that. One of the pieces I submitted has a serious meaning behind it and discusses the mass incarceration of minorities, the others just connect to my hometown of Chicago. All of my life experiences contribute to my art, the reason some of my pieces are Chicago landscapes is because I’ve grown up here. This has been home for the last 18 years. Over the years I have lived here I realized Chicago is a very creative city and I am honored to be able to create art along the very talented people that live here. Personally I don’t have a very specific step by step process when it comes to making art, I just think of something I want to create and do it. Somedays the thought of what I want to create comes to me faster and sometimes it takes me days to realize what exactly I want to do. Most of my pieces are acrylic, I love painting a lot. I find it is easier for me and more enjoyable overall. It’s a weird thing but I feel better with a paintbrush in my hand than a pencil. I also really enjoy photography, since I was small I wanted to be a professional. It comes a lot more natural to me than anything else. I tend to just pick up a camera and take photos when the moment feels right. Overall, there is no right answer when making art and anyone can be an artist. Making art to me is very special and gratifying.
