Artist Statement: “Las Parakatas,” meaning “the butterflies” in the Purépecha language, represents the natural migration of life that is not bound by borders. This piece incorporates my personal experiences as a migrant worker and the landscapes of migration and travel, similar to the route taken by the monarch butterfly. Thick layering of acrylic mediums were used to create the textures of the indigenous clothes and natural scenery.
