Artist Statement: This piece uses the image of an umbrella to symbolize how our desire to shelter ourselves may do more harm than good, as it gives this false sense of security. The umbrella, appearing almost like a flower, gives this sense of comfort by using aspects of nature. The raindrops and spikes inside the piece show the negativity that comes with sheltering ourselves, as it may bring feelings of isolation and a fear of the outside world. I made this piece thinking about how people shouldn’t be afraid to reach out and be vulnerable during these times that we are prone to sheltering ourselves.
