Artist Statement: This is part of a series that I’m working on drawing portraits of people with their creative tool of choice. My Mom is a violinist/violist, and one of her violas was made by this luthier, Carl F. Becker. We visited him in his studio once, and his enormous hands just dwarfed the violins he worked on. He was such a gentle man, kind and generous with smiles. The colors represent the joyful music that comes from his instruments, as well as the soul that he embedded in each.
