Artist Statement: Throughout my life identity has always been the biggest question, and how I view myself. My own journey for figuring out my identity has not yet been successful and I hoped to portray my struggles and my directionless search through these photos. The photos are meant to feel isolated and lonely, since I am the only one who can complete this journey. The main subject is not always the focal point, because I think to find out more about my identity I need to look outside of just myself. These photos are meant to have a strange aspect to them, so they feel abnormal and unnatural to represent the discomfort of seeking answers.
Identity is crucial to self. The lingering lack of identity is expressed through the absence of features in the subject of the photos and the overarching darkness. Each photo progressively becomes more depersonalized and lifeless. In the search for finding myself, I look to my surroundings, but nature tells me nothing I didn’t already know. In the end I find myself to simply be a smaller part to a bigger whole, and a minor piece of the background. The journey being lackluster and the trail ending dead.
