Artist Statement:

This piece is meant to be a 3D version of the character named Carol in the picture book Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Bernard Sendak. I chose to create this monster specifically because as a little kid my mom and I would read the story whenever it was just me and her home while my big sisters were at school. The entire story intrigued me and made me uncomfortable and almost scared which made me realize how important home was. I used the texture of him to express that on the outside, while he looks scary and a little unsettling, he really isn’t a bad creature by making his fur look more like fur and fuzzy with texture. I think making the eyes a neon yellow and having pointy hair was impactful too because it did add to the unsettling look. I had trouble portraying the 2D character that was shaded like a drawing into 3D sculpture form but I would make lines to add depth and make the shadows more prominent. After I baked my sculpture I had trouble painting him without using straight black or like a dark brown like what is used in drawings but instead I decided to use just a darker shade of the original clay colors to show the shadows. But overall I think I did not do too bad in conveying the essence of Carol.
