Artist Statement:

I call my artwork “Painted Dreams”. The idea of it is that you can create your own dreams. It features a girl who appears to be painting a whale in mid-air.
I created this piece of digital art on an app called “Autodesk Sketchbook”. It all started as a rough sketch, but then I added colors and layers upon layers of shades and highlights. I mostly used a kind of highlighter brush called “vintage marker” for all the shades and highlights.
The idea I tried to express in my artwork is that you can control your own dreams. The paintbrush symbolizes creativity and control, and the whale, girl, and starfish it has painted symbolize the dreams you have. The red wisps coming out of the “dreams” symbolize the belief that you can never achieve your dreams. The dreamcatcher is catching those negative thoughts, which wrap around the little feathers. The negative thoughts will always be there, but you have to let them go away somewhere far from your dreams and keep painting them.
When creating this artwork, I tried to improve my ability to add symbols to an artwork. With the paintbrush and the dreamcatcher, I think I reached that goal. I tried to improve my skills in adding highlights and shadows, and I do think I am improving.
Overall, I like the way my artwork conveyed the theme of dreams. It is better than I thought it would be. I learned how to add highlights to an object according to the light source. I can try to work more on that in my future artworks.
