Artist Statement: What I attempted to do in my project was to through the medium of collage mimic the art style of Bisa Butler to create an interesting spin on the famous picture of frederick douglass. I visually described this by trying to match not the exact colors of the picture but to instead match the tone of the colors in contrast to the surrounding colors. I wanted to share with potential viewers that although a picture shows things exactly how they look it doesn’t show them exactly how they are. One important technique I used was cutting each piece slightly over the size designated by the tracing paper, this was important because as a human cannot cut paper one hundred percent accurately and as such I had the ability to overlap them to prevent the white of the project paper’s surface from shining through. I would say that the most successful part of my piece was the face, I think that despite my ambitious plan I managed to for the most part convey the subtle details of the face. The biggest problem I faced was that some of the small details were too small to be easily cut using scissors, to amend this I was forced to cut out the pieces by using smaller cuts from different angles to avoid tearing the paper. I think what influenced me the most for this project was my eight grade history class. I remember learning about Frederick Douglass in that class and being interested in the story of his life.
