Artist Statement: Inspired by the photographer, Trung Huy Pham, the artwork interprets his work in a more interpretative and physical form. The water lily harvest in Vietnam holds high importance to me because whenever I visited Vietnam, my family and I would try to participate and help in the water lily harvest process. Although lilies may seem and look insignificant, lilies encompass all of what the Vietnamese culture is. Lilies become the decorations and different types of foods that make up Vietnam. I think that’s an important aspect to really highlight, which why I made this artwork. The stark contrast of the colors in the background and in the figures emphasize the importance of the laborer’s work. The position of the workers in the water also creates unity and balance.
