Artist Statement: “Alice in Wonderland” has always been one of my favorite childhood movies. At the time I never understood why she got dreams or visions until I researched it when I was older. Alice has many symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia, so I divided my artwork into two sides of Alice. The side she viewed of herself showed many scenes I remembered seeing as a child: Chesire- the cat, the Rose tree, the “Eat Me”/ “Drink Me” pastries, and tea-stained flowers which I painted without color to symbolize the plain white roses. On the other hand, the other side contained many illusions, like what people thought she saw. I also included her name in red and what names I imagined her being called for seeing things.
The big idea of my artwork was to show the two sides of Alice, coping with schizophrenia; how she viewed herself and how others saw her. I also wanted to include her torments, or how she might’ve looked not being able to be comprehended by others.
