Artist Statement:

In this piece, I used colored pencil to illustrate an overhead view of a picnic spread. I incorporated a variety of colors to capture the richness of the different food items — namely, an avocado, figs, plate of berries, a croissant, and even a loaf of my mother’s Polish poppyseed cake — evoking a sense of warmth and nostalgia. Through careful attention to detail, I highlighted the texture of the food, from the delicate seeds of the berries to the flaky layers of the croissant. The patterned picnic blanket serves as both a grounding element and a visual contrast, adding rhythm and cohesion to the piece. By emphasizing these details, I wanted to create an inviting, tactile scene that celebrates the sensory and communal experience of a meal. The picnic scene represents an idealized, almost dreamlike moment of togetherness, where time slows down and life feels abundant.
