Artist Statement: When thinking of the topic of dreams, I didn’t want to just consider the cliché interpretation of hopes and plans for the future. As beautiful and inspiring that interpretation is, I wanted to focus more on my surrealistic creativity. When I step into my ceramics class, I never want to make something simple. A lion is not just a lion, it’s eating a human with an uncanny facial expression. I don’t want to make a simple cup, I want to add clowns with playful facial expressions and colors. A floppy unsettling head, a face jug with dramatically large ears that serve as a cup handle, or a dopey three headed creature all show my surrealistic imagination. I like to add twists and unrealistic details to my artwork, making my art seem like it stepped out of my silly dreams. I make sure I create art pieces that I am proud of and satisfied with in the end. I take pride in my ability to not only create concepts but also execute my ideas into physical dreamlike sculptures.
