Artist Statement:
An acrylic surrealist painting that captures a snapshot of boating in the summer. Taking inspiration from René Magritte’s surrealist works, especially those focused on clouds and birds (e.g. The Sky Bird), I visualized the clouds as feathers–how they appeared to me in the moment–and translated that into my work. I simplified the composition by sectioning the piece into basic areas of warm and cool tones, allowing components to have a dazed feel. I kept most areas clean, bright, and light to capture the airy feeling of floating. The feathers are painted in a progression from large to small, falling in a zigzag pattern, depicting the feathers “shrinking” as they descend, allowing them to fall onto the boat at a natural size. Ultimately, my painting aims to convey the weightless sensation I experienced that sunny day.
