Artist Statement:

An acrylic surrealist painting depicting a cosmic city after an apocalypse. Inspired by Chicago’s involvement during the Rust Belt era, this piece aims to depict the process that brings symbols of prosperity to the graveyard. The incorporation of Calder’s “Flamingo” sculpture calls back to the new age globalization that launched cities into their era of prosperity, while the twisted, outdated version of Gang’s “WMS Boathouse” represents the urban glory of the past age. The wild, energetic cats borrowed from Wyeth’s “Maine Coon Cats” taking over the landscape attest to the death of prosperity. However, the grand architectural elements remain, now left to shadow and ruin, leaving the viewer with the thought and recognition of the glory this environment once experienced, but without a vision of the city at its peak of success.
