Artist Statement:
In this drawing I used colored pencils and sharpie markers. The meaning of my artwork is to honor those who come before you it’s symbolic of family and traditional coming together. The people in this photo are my mom, dad, older sister, and me in my moms stomach. I was really inspired by Kehinde Wiley’s use of florals in his work.
I drew flowers that my mom loves in the background and that have always been a part of my childhood, I also drew flowers that are traditionally seen on “papel picado”. Other traditional elements are the dresses that are on my dads and sisters sides, I really enjoyed how the dresses framed the drawing. This drawing serves as a nice reminder of who came before me and the rich culture I was born into, which I will forever be grateful for.
