Artist Statement: Much of my portfolio consists of metal worked pieces that I have formed to make whimsical patterns and sculptures. I love working with metal because the result is very rewarding and I love the process of cutting, attaching, and cleaning up the different components to create one final polished piece. Metalsmithing is by far my favorite practice but I also love to paint and discover new techniques like linocut printmaking. The works that I decided to show are what I believe to be the best pieces from my portfolio and show who I am as a person and an artist. I strive to make people feel happy when looking at my work, so I use a lot of color and fun shapes to create unique and cheerful pieces. I am also very influenced by the spaces I am in, especially Chicago, so I like to incorporate elements from the city into my art. You can see this especially in my “Welcome to Chicago” painting where the city is the main focus. It is also evident in my piece titled “Cicada” where I took inspiration from Chicago summers and the abundance of those particular insects. I also love to push myself to be the best artist I can be and challenge myself to make more intricate and complex pieces such as the hinged metal box that is featured in my “Star Collection”. This drive pushes me to improve my skills and try new things artistically, which is one of the most important and rewarding aspects of creating. Overall I love challenging myself to create meaningful and fun pieces that can be appreciated by a wide variety of people.
