Artist Statement: I create art to tell stories. There’s a saying in musical theater that goes, “When emotions are too high to just speak, you sing, and when emotions are too high to just sing, you dance,” and, for me, when emotions are too high to dance, I make art. Every submission in my portfolio was created with powerful emotions and stories behind it. From excitement to regret to desperation to grief to joy and wonder and so much more, my works span the entire emotional spectrum. They are largely inspired by my personal experience, but other works like SWIFT or Synchronous are inspired by the power of human curiosity or the feeling of being part of something bigger. My artistic process typically begins with brainstorming an idea or concept to build my art around. After that, I create a smaller sketch of what I want to create, and then I just dive in. When I work, I prefer to do it in larger chunks a couple of times a week rather than in smaller, more frequent sections. I make every piece of art about exploration. It must always have new techniques, a perspective I haven’t tried before, or a different style than my previous projects. My desire for exploration is largely why I work with so many different mediums. I love digital art for its cleanness and how easy it is to bring anything you can imagine to life. I love drawing because nothing beats the feeling of putting a pencil and markers to paper. I love using ceramics to sculpt, build, and carve away at a three-dimensional object with my own two hands, and I love pushing myself and improving through painting. Because my works are so tied up in discovery, stories, and emotions, they are incredibly important to me.
