Artist Statement: When I dream I dream of home, of Chicago, the city I grew up in and the city that taught me the art I love. When I first picked up a camera of my own it was to explore the city with my friends and that same motivation drives my photography today. Though I still venture out with my camera, the goal isn’t just to create scrap-bookable memories but to create art thus furthering my creative goals. As I explore with my camera I look for scenes that I hope will make my viewers think for a moment when they look at them later, which is why I decontextualize most of my photographs. As a native Chicagoan with family or friends in all corners of the city, it becomes easy to spot Chicago in an array of photos, especially with iconic visions such as the bungalows, the waterways, and the skyline; not only do I tend to deviate from easily recognizable spots, I also attempt to eliminate much of the context surrounding the scene. Through isolating subjects, the focus is forced onto them, lending a mystique they would not typically hold.
