Description/Artist Statement: Growing up. When we’re young it’s all we think about. We think about the independence we have. But, when growing means entering adulthood that independence sounds intimidating. We realize that we are about to be on our own, navigating the world. These ideas surface as college approaches and soon, I will be off into the adult world. Therefore I wanted to represent this struggle by juxtaposing the literal definition or process of growth – Mitosis – with the concept of growing up. Growing up can be a painful process so I focused on expressing this pain through the facial expressions I explore in this piece. I wanted to explore realism and experiment with markers and colored pencils to create human-like cell structures. Using markers and colored pencils gave me freedom that I truly enjoyed and I was able to take my unfamiliarity with the process of blending makers to find new ways of combining colors (i.e., using dots, different strokes, etc).
