Artist statement: The pieces I’ve selected each started out as quick pencil sketches. Using different mediums, I explored areas of art that I haven’t experimented with before. When creating, I love variety, which is why my pieces that I am submitting are finished with charcoal, watercolor, and digital art. A lot of what drives my art is the ability to stretch the thought of what things are “supposed” to look like. The still life pieces that I’ve included in my submission were from my first ever college class. The watercolor butterfly painting was created out of the question, “Why do we fear letting go of the things closest to us?” The jellyfish and bee are some of my favorite animals and I wanted to see how I could be creative with simple designs. One of the tools that I often use is my iPad and the app Procreate. I take my original paper sketch and transfer it to my iPad, which allows me to play around with colors, shading, textures, and shapes. If I had to pick a favorite medium to work with, it would be sketching. From a young age I have loved sketching because it gives me freedom to try out new things that aren’t required to be perfect. I’m very grateful for the chance to submit my art into this Senior Exhibition.
