Artist Statement: I create art for a variety of purposes. We encounter so much fragmentation of thinking and feeling in our daily lives. Making art pulls things back together for me. It is also a way of expressing my imagination. That is true throughout the process of my own work. Developing ideas for the work is extremely thoughtful and informative in the beginning. Later, combining those ideas, bringing them to life, and working toward a finished product that feels coherent and complete. For me, that’s very motivating, something that keeps me going.
My vision for my projects was to express what a person may think of or see in their dreams when they sleep, through surrealism. When I think of dreams, I often visualize a surreal image. For these projects, I decided to focus mainly on the technique of paper cutting. I wanted to showcase my vision by altering my subjects with unrealistic features, as we typically can’t quite put together or can hardly remember the dreams we experience in our sleep.
