Grade: 12
Materials: Alcohol markers on paper
Dimensions: 11” × 14”
Description: This piece is a self portrait. It’s about the jealousy I feel towards myself with makeup on. I’m jealous of how perfect, even, and bright my skin is compared to how tired and imperfect my natural face is. I’ve been grappling with this feeling for a long time and decided to make a piece depicting this feeling. The green eyes represent my jealousy, as they have dark circles and imperfections, while the “perfect” version of myself has rosy cheeks and perfect skin.
Artist Statement: All of the work in my portfolio is a reflection of a part of myself. While some are not self portraits, they depict an interest of mine or something I believe in. For each piece, I took advantage of the materials. For the print, I used the sharp nature of printmaking to depict the harmful effects of over stimulation. For the two acrylic ink pieces, I added water to create different washes of color. For the alcohol marker piece, I layered contrasting colors. As a whole, the pieces show the versatility of art and the uniqueness of every material.
