Artist Statement: I made my self portrait with my school behind me because I wanted to represent that this is my final year at Amundsen. I made it by first sketching myself. Then positioning my school behind me, as well as everything else. My friend inspired me to create my portrait. Last year she submitted her own portrait for the All-City senior portfolio exhibition. My artistic process is that I first evaluate what’s the main focus of my piece, I sketch out an outline then I added colors and add proper detail and shading. I’m interested in using color pencils because I’m trying to improve my shading skills. Plus pencils are very practical and simple. I enjoy drawing with color pencils because I have been drawing with them since I was a little kid. The experiences I have had in the past have benefited me and my artwork. I say this because when I used to just fill things instead of taking my time and properly shade with color pencils. Even now I still hope to improve on different aspects of drawing. Drawing on a daily basis has helped me improve on drawing people from different angles, showing more emotion and movement. This work means a lot to me because I’ve come a long way from getting since getting into drawing and this is an amazing opportunity to display my art.
