Artist Statement: My work reflects how the Hispanic culture has impacted me and the ways I felt represented and connected. Throughout my pieces, I use symbolic imagery which includes flowers, hair, the sun and moon, butterflies, and bright colors, in addition to self-portraits to represent the connection I feel to my culture. In my self-portraits, El Sol and La Luna, I am taking the place of the moon, representing the negative values in life like death and loss, and the sun that has the positive values like life and blossoming nature, significant to the Hispanic culture. Through the use of acrylic paint, I thought about how bright colors catch people’s eyes and make what I want the viewers to look at stand out. While painting I experiment by mixing colors together to get a perfect match as well as to add shading to areas like the hair and skin, using different brush sizes; small brushes for details and big brushes to fill out blank spaces. With each piece, I think about how I am able to add symbolic imagery to my personal experiences with my culture, using images I took myself or found and felt connected to add to these art pieces.
