Description: I love drawing facial expressions and in this particular expression, I wanted to give viewers space to think/ create a ‘story’ in their heads. Where is this character from? Why does he have an ‘eye patch’? What is he looking at? etc. These are the questions I want viewers to ask themselves to create a narrative in their heads.
Artist Statement: I love to draw realistic portraits or objects because of the satisfaction I get once I finish them. Although intricate details are always tricky to illustrate, it’s always worth it upon completion. I struggled with using colors in my art pieces for the longest time. I am red-green color blind so I tend to work around colors or ask my peers whether I am using the right color I intend on using. I began to feel comfortable with media related to graphite, charcoal, and black ink-pens. Therefore, I frequently use materials involving black and white. Though, I recently decided such a defect won’t stop me from creating, experimenting, and exploring color. Some of the artworks I have chosen for this project include media I have rarely ever used. Acrylic paint and digital media are difficult to utilize when you aren’t familiar with them; however, taking the risk of trying helped me produce some of my favorite works. The animals I drew are in theme with the idea of ‘what if wild animals ruled the world.’ I could imagine the hierarchy being built in the animal kingdom which inspired me to draw the lion ‘giving orders’ to the deer. Additionally, I wanted to incorporate a real-life problem within the animal kingdom. Plastic can play a big part in the endangerment of animals. Polar bears are unfortunately one of them for which I decided to draw a polar bear covered in plastic, “suffocating” them. These ideas are something I want to spread awareness of. Not enough people are caring and that is part of the problem. I want to begin influencing my city, and then, the world.
