Artist Statement: My work is an exploration of identity and self expression. I grew up in a neighborhood and school where being ‘different’ is looked down upon. Growing up dressing different, doing bold makeup, or even having colored hair were viewed as weird by those around me. Because of this I have never been able to truly express myself or present myself the way I wanted to because I feared the judgement my peers and society would have on me. My photography work is focused on finding ones true self and expressing yourself to the fullest. In my photographs I create a new persona or identity for myself through the use of makeup, color, and expressions. My photography expresses the frustration of feeling trapped and finally letting go to be your truest self without letting others words and judgments stop you. My painting work focuses on an abstract view of life. I believe their are many different ways one may view certain feelings or events. Through my painting I portray how I see these thoughts or feelings through a variety of color or texture/movement. I choose to make these paintings because I want people to see these different views and feelings in a new way and be able to interpret it in a way they can relate back to themselves. I want to bring up new discussions on how one views life.
