Description: Childhood and Beauty
Artist Statement: As a little girl I would play with Barbie dolls. I have grown to love her blonde hair, her long legs and especially her small waistline. Barbie was portrayed as the perfect main character in all her movies. Almost all the “good guys” in fact had similar features as she did. In this world of hers there is no such thing as having a round stomach or having any sort of skin problems. As a kid I thought there was something wrong with my body, so I envied hers. Green is the color that can represent envy, disgust, or wealth. It contrasts well with the red and pink. Pink is associated with femininity. The mirror captures a completely different mood from the rest of this piece because of this green background and this nearly hidden person. The mirror, in a way, has been used as a device that shows truth behind a child innocently playing with dolls. It is in the reflection that we find one’s true nature.
