Description: This piece is called “Secrecy Under Beauty,” and is based on the Chinese mythology tale: The White Snake. story’s themes of secrets and feminity align with the High Priestess tarot card and its composition reflects the black and white pillars side-by-side and the female subject- Bai SuZhen, the protagonist of the story- behind the veil, unlike the card’s original design with the veil behind her.

Artist Statement: My traditional pieces were all colored with Copic markers and fine liners. What I like about this medium is how easy it is to blend colors together and the large selection that I have at my disposal. All of my digital pieces submitted were all created using an art application Procreate on an iPad pro. What I enjoy the most in my art-making process is coloring. Getting to experiment with complementary, tertiary, and other color combinations and seeing how they look with each other is always an engaging experience. This is especially true in my digital art process. Getting to play with different layers and finding new ways to make the colors pop allows me to give my art its own distinct style. Most of my inspiration comes from video games and anime whose stories take place in fantasy settings. The inspiration that other creators take to make their craft draws my attention and it motivates me to take that inspiration and make it my own. I especially enjoy researching old folk tales and myths. Some stories have multiple iterations and interpretations, just like art. Getting to the root of the story’s themes and translating that into my own art makes the process all the more fun and gives the meaning behind my work more depth.
