Description: A piece that first began as a realism/contrast/lighting study became somewhat experimental and I endeavored to capture light in a more diverse form, which begged the blending of sharp thin highlights with softer ambient brushwork. I used shadows to add depth to the piece in an attempt to emphasize her humanity as I didn’t want her to appear too ethereal and thus cannot connect with the audience as something other than a generic stranger. Finally, the name Ophelia was inspired by her vague setting, as if she was someone’s dream or perhaps a long-lost memory, hence the black and white of old Victorian photos, the very same period’s portraits also inspired the idea to use an oil brush for everything save the strokes of scribbled light, which is the effect of a dip pen, and the strokes of a watercolour pencil and airbrush which also served as additional soft lighting framing Ophelia as a whole.
