Artist Statement: I can express my freedom and individualism via art, which is necessary to feel present in my physical and emotional self. I started with deep introspection and reflection. It was vital to find ways to ground myself in the artmaking process. I began with collage art, an art form that expresses the cluster of emotions I wanted to showcase through my work. Starting with mixed media, it’s a medium that conveys my spectrum of emotions, deeply integrated into my artist’s purpose. This technique made me utilize my materials and connect with the small items in life or even places. From the decay of a leaf reminding me of the importance of vitality to the rough texture of a paper bag reminding me of how organic life objects can make me feel more present in nature. Using objects from life through artwork connected me to my environment. Though the process of my work varies in execution, the finalized piece uniquely displays my inquiry. My artwork process starts with brainstorming ways to express a specific emotion or situation. The type of medium used typically aligns with the artwork’s message. I collect objects that have diversified patterns, dimensions, and textures and apply them to my 2D work to elevate the piece’s meaning. It is essential to me, as an artist, to not only convey my perspective through mixed media collage but to use my art as a guide for others to be grounded in existence. Making artwork assists me with understanding my surroundings and processing my emotions deeply as a means to self-improve. The emotional value of my work thrives through mending my impact on my surroundings and my relationship with them. Although fighting detachment was challenging, I recognized that art provides a deeper connection to my surroundings and viewers.
