Artist Statement: This piece not only reflects food waste, but also its economical and societal consequences. The background is a representation of a plastic/garbage bag, while in the middle sits a plate filled with food, wrappers, and money. I purposefully added the juxtaposition of the money and food sitting inside a garbage bag as it alludes to the idea of not only food being wasted, but money is also being wasted. More specifically, someone’s dinner becomes nonexistent. Both the symbol of money and the scattered food highlight the underlying and overlooked problems of wastage and consumerism that are embedded in the present day. For the process of work, I experimented with different compositions using real objects. For instance, I placed real fruit, chips and wrappers on a plate that was set on top of a black garbage bag. I attempted to apply contrast by utilizing bold colors to a dark background to further emphasize the focal point of waste. The artist that had a major influence on my work was Stephane Dillies, who also utilizes a top view of the inside of a disposal whilst following themes of food waste. Initially, I wanted to use paint or create another sculpture, however, I decided to explore other various materials. For this piece, I used colored pencils and standard graphite pencils. This work is meant to be a reflection of global issues today and force the audience to be reminded of the actions they take contributing to food waste on a daily basis.
