Artist Statement: Inspired by Bo Burhnam’s Inside, “Chronically Online” is a series of self portraits depicting the deep woven threads of the internet in today’s society.

The internet. One of the world’s greatest creations, sometimes terrible, but great. The internet has found itself in every nook and cranny of society today, from personal enjoyment, to work, to communication, to even sources of comfort. I find myself starting and ending most of my days with technology by my side, and I’ve found that many others do too. “Chronically Online” represents the struggle between loving the internet and hating it. While the internet provides laughs from funny cat videos, it also provides immediate knowledge of the next school shooting. The internet brings good and bad to everyone, whether they want to admit it or not.

With titles from Bo Burhnam’s Inside, a 1-hour musical comedic special with a deep insight into the internet culture, this collection of self portraits represents how deeply woven the internet is into American culture. It also represents how the influence of the internet has heightened depression and anxiety in teens and adults because of numerical attachments to self worth. Things like likes, retweets, and followers have become the new standard for popularity, and often times even happiness.
