Artist Statement: “The Collectivist American” explores my cultural identity a Filipino-American, the collectivist values of a traditional Filipino household, and the association of individualism that comes with being born in America. Despite posing confidently in my patriotically stained shirt to indicate how my family perceives my lack of manners and my label as an artist, my skin adorns cracks to represent my fragile, sensitive nature. Silhouettes of sampaguitas, the Filipino national flowers, and my father, who had supported my endeavors, affirm that my identity is uniquely cultivated, and I am just as much a Filipina as I am American.
