Artist Statement: This portrait of my grandmother both honors her memory and explores the wisdom and knowledge she imparted on me. I chose to depict her at a young age, with bold colors and the word “perseverance” surrounding her. I layered the background in a flannel print which was typical attire for her during my childhood. Throughout the piece I created stitching to symbolize how she intricately and carefully sewed the layers of her own life together. My grandmother taught me how to overcome challenges while simultaneously teaching me how to sew.
